SPACE PROJECTS – LONDON DESIGN STUDIO

Fluid Stone Studio manufactured this large bespoke concrete conference table for the London offices of Space Projects, an interior design and architectural practice with a long history of commercial and automotive showroom design.
The table was designed as a deliberately substantial piece of furniture, constructed from five separate precast concrete slabs, each approximately 70mm thick. Cast in natural Portland grey concrete, the heavyweight proportions gave the table a strong architectural presence within the studio.
Rather than bringing the slabs together as a continuous surface, the design incorporated 10mm shadow gaps between each section. Matching recessed gaps beneath the concrete created the impression that the individual slabs were slightly separated from the supporting structure, emphasising their thickness and mass.
The restrained detailing was an important part of the design. With no decorative edge treatment or applied finish, the character of the table came from the natural grey concrete, the scale of the slabs and the precise dark lines formed by the shadow gaps.
Casting the table as a series of separate components also made a piece of this size practical to manufacture, transport and install. Each section could be handled individually while the finished assembly still read as one large, monolithic conference table.
The project was commissioned for Space Projects’ where the concrete table formed the centrepiece of the main meeting space. The industrial character of the concrete worked particularly well with the exposed steel, timber ceiling and glazed partitions of the office interior.
