POLISHED CONCRETE KITCHEN WORKTOPS
BATH – SOMERSET
This Larkhall, Bath kitchen features bespoke polished concrete worktops templated, manufactured and installed by Fluid Stone Studio. Cast in our natural Portland grey mix at a substantial 50mm thickness, the concrete brings a simple, solid materiality to a kitchen that combines historic Bath stone with contemporary glass, steel and timber.
The main island incorporates a large cut-out for an undermounted sink together with cast-in drainer grooves, creating a practical working area without interrupting the clean lines of the concrete surface. A substantial matching concrete upstand was also produced with a cast-in socket opening and carefully scribed during installation to follow the irregular surface of the original Bath stone wall.
Concrete worktops in an award-winning Bath kitchen
The kitchen was designed by deVOL using cabinetry from its Sebastian Cox collection, with band-sawn timber providing a warm contrast to the smooth Portland grey concrete. The original Bath stone wall was retained as an important feature of the room, while the glazed extension and dark steel-framed doors introduce a much more contemporary architectural element.
The 50mm concrete worktops sit particularly well between these different materials. Rather than trying to imitate stone, the concrete was allowed to retain its own subtle colour variation and natural character, providing a restrained backdrop to the textured cabinetry and historic masonry.
Function was particularly important in this kitchen. One of the owners is a professional chef, so the layout needed to work as a genuine cooking and entertaining space as well as forming the centrepiece of the new extension. The generous island, undermounted sink and integrated drainer grooves create a large uninterrupted preparation area while keeping the detailing simple.
Fluid Stone Studio templated the kitchen before casting the worktops off-site, then returned to Bath to carry out the installation and final fitting to the existing stonework.
Featured & recognised
The finished Bath Larkhall Kitchen went on to win Kitchen Design of the Year 2019 – Under £25K at the Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards and has subsequently been featured by deVOL Kitchens, Remodelista and The Modern House.
The project is a particularly good example of why polished concrete works so well in both period and contemporary interiors: its understated finish can sit alongside historic stone, natural timber and modern steel without competing with any of them.
