POLISHED CONCRETE KITCHEN WORKTOPS
THE PONDS – GOOSTREY – CHESHIRE
This striking kitchen at The Ponds in Goostrey, Cheshire combines polished concrete, dark stained oak and antiqued brass to create a refined interpretation of industrial design. Fluid Stone Studio was commissioned to produce the bespoke polished concrete worktops, with a pale natural finish chosen to contrast with the richness of the cabinetry and metalwork.
The substantial concrete surfaces provide a calm, understated counterpoint to the dark brushed-oak kitchen by Hetherington Newman. Their slightly textured finish retains the natural variation of cast concrete, while the generous edge profile gives the worktops enough visual weight to sit comfortably alongside the heavy timber cabinetry, antiqued brass detailing and industrial fittings.
A large central island forms the focus of the kitchen, combining preparation space with informal seating and creating a strong connection between the different areas of the room. Pale polished concrete was deliberately used to lift the darker material palette and reflect natural light from the large steel-framed windows.
One of the most distinctive features of the project is the exposed industrial ventilation. A bespoke Westin extractor sits above the range cooker, with galvanised ductwork left visible as part of the overall design rather than concealed. Open shelving, dark timber, aged metal finishes and carefully detailed lighting continue the industrial character throughout the space.
What makes this project particularly successful is the balance between materials. Concrete can sometimes be associated with stark or minimalist interiors, but here it sits comfortably alongside warm timber, brass and traditional detailing. The result is a kitchen that feels substantial and highly crafted without becoming overly heavy.
The project was photographed by Darren Chung, whose images capture both the architectural scale of the room and the finer material details of the polished concrete worktops.
