CONCRETE KITCHEN WORKTOPS
SHOREDITCH – LONDON
This loft-style apartment on Tabernacle Street in Shoreditch combines warm timber, dark metal and softly mottled concrete to create a restrained industrial interior with plenty of character.
Fluid Stone Studio produced the bespoke 40mm polished concrete worktops in our Nutmeg colour. Rather than using a uniform polished finish, the surface was acid etched and stained to create a softer, more varied appearance, with subtle tonal movement across the concrete. The finish works particularly well against the dark stained walnut veneer cabinetry, adding warmth without losing the natural character of the material.
The kitchen was designed by Malt Creative, with bespoke cabinetry and joinery by Jensen Bespoke. The dark walnut veneer gives the room a rich, almost furniture-like quality, while the pale brown-grey tones of the concrete provide a quieter contrast across the worktops and splashback areas.
An existing exposed steel column within the apartment was retained and painted black, reinforcing the industrial character of the original loft space. Together with the dark cabinetry, black fittings and simple lighting, it gives the kitchen a strong architectural framework without making the room feel overly heavy.
The acid-etched Nutmeg concrete softens that palette. Its mottled surface has more variation than a conventional polished finish, helping the worktops feel tactile and slightly aged rather than overly pristine. The 40mm edge gives the concrete enough visual weight to sit comfortably alongside the substantial walnut cabinetry while still maintaining a clean contemporary profile.
This project is a good example of how polished concrete can work particularly well in urban interiors where the aim is not a stark minimalist finish, but something warmer and more layered. The combination of walnut, blackened steel and subtly stained concrete creates a kitchen that feels both contemporary and sympathetic to the industrial character of the Shoreditch apartment.
