Concrete countertops - Chiswick
These concrete countertops were cast in a natural white cement based concrete, with a lighter limestone colour. The client chose a 20mm shadow gap detail to emphasise the joint between the worktops and legs. They also incorporated a recessed sink cover which was cast with the same concrete mix as the worktops. The cover sits flush with the work-surface when the sink is not required. This gives a bit of extra prep space when cooking or entertaining.
We gave the up-stand on the back wall some extra depth for a nice chunky feel. This was cast in a vertical orientation which produces some desirable lay lines and textures on the front face. The extra depth also doubles up as a small shelf for condiments and herbs.
As with all our concrete countertops, the finished product was sealed with a reactive densifying system. This hardens the surface by reacting with the free lime which is produced as a by product of the cement hydration. Crystals of a glass-like substance are formed in the micro capillaries which closes up the pores to help protect against the ingress of deep stains. The resulting surface will be similar to a natural stone equivalent. It will be completely breathable and never able to peel off.
